Steam data extraction

May 29, 2024

Gaming platforms can function beyond mere gaming arenas. They also serve as hubs for gamer communication. The data housed within gaming platforms could potentially give crucial evidence, shedding light on users’ behaviors. Moreover, in-game chats could also serve as an alternative means of communication for criminals.

With this in mind, we’ve opted to support the extraction of gaming artifacts and have added capabilities to analyze a gaming app: Steam.

Steam is a digital distribution platform developed by Valve Corporation, primarily for purchasing, downloading, and playing video games. It was launched in 2003 and has since become one of the largest and most popular platforms for PC gaming. In 2023, the platform reported 33 million peak concurrent Steam users worldwide.

Steam has played a significant role in shaping the landscape of PC gaming, providing a centralized platform for gamers to discover, purchase, and play games. Steam has also fostered a vibrant gaming community  in which users can have discussions and buy and sell game items.

Let’s take a closer look at how Steam data can be parsed in Oxygen Forensic® Detective.
